Long Overdue Family Room Update

According to this blog, back in August of 2013, I was replacing the fluting around the fireplace.  So that got done, and then I went ahead and planked the wall and painted it white.  (Looks like I didn't do a great job of cleaning for the picture.  Sorry, not sorry. Funny how as I age I care less and less about perfection.)

The planks gave us one "fancy" wall, and made all the other walls look sad, so I decided to dress those up as well.

The family room is connected to the kitchen, so I couldn't just stop at the end of the family room--I had to take the fanciness around the corner.

All was great for a year or two until we decided to put on a back deck.  This involved tearing out a window and installing a slider. So there went the trim.  Ack!

Fixing that is going to be my little project this summer.  The work never ends!!!!

Planning it out

One of my friends got me to look up bullet journaling on Pinterest.  Don't go look because you'll totally get sucked in like I did.  Such cuteness.  I've always been list maker, but this takes it to a whole new level.

I'm getting to ready to start up my Couch to 5K next week.  I did this a few years ago and found it fun and manageable.  But then I got a heel spur and then lots of other things happened, and I didn't keep up with the running.  So now I'm trying this again.

If I must be honest, I'm not trying to become a runner.  I just want to get back in shape again.  Last year I did the keto diet and lost 12 pounds pretty quickly, but then I just stalled out.  My goal is to lose another 10 - 12 pounds.  I'm combining exercise with the Young Living Slique Complete Kit (which will be coming in next week's mail) and I'm excited to see some progress.  I won't be posting before and after bikini pictures of myself, though.  Sorry to disappoint!

OK.  Back to the bullet journaling.  This is nothing to brag about. I'm just a bujo baby, but I've mapped out my 8 week training schedule and will mark off the days as I go to track my progress.  And also, since drawing banners is so addictive and reminds me of when I was in middle school where everything got banners and curly-q's, my to-do lists have also upped their game.

This Blog

I like looking back over this blog.  It's nice to have a place where I can be reminded about how much fun I used to have sewing and making things.  Being creative is still very much a part of who I am, even though now I have less time for it.

This blog is not going to turn into a health blog.  I can't think of anything more annoying than to have to listen to people's health issues non-stop. I'm not going to do that to you.

I want to thank my readers who have kept me on their feeds all this time.  I'll post here when I can because the urge to create is coming back, along with urge to reconnect with bloggy friends.

And if you'd like to find me elsewhere, I'm also here:

Getting Better

When we last left off, I was telling you about my kid's health issues.  So this is something I'm not a fan of discussing in detail.  Yes, they had a diagnosis, but I'm not comfortable saying what it was on the internet b/c their personal health issues are for them to tell someday when they feel it's appropriate.

Let's just say we felt like we were living under a curse.  Every day was a struggle and we were all total stress balls all the time.  I would wake up and my first thought would be, "Oh yeah, they still have *&^%$#@." I'd spend much of my free time researching with other moms on Facebook groups.  Then at night I'd fall asleep thinking about it.  I'd dream about it.  My whole life revolved around their autoimmune stuff.

Then one day a mom on Facebook posted about having success with homeopathy.  Her child was making gradual changes toward better health.  She gave me her phone number and we chatted.  It was unbelievable how much hope she had in her voice when she described how badly off her child had been and how much better she was doing only a few months out.

My husband and I had heard about homeopathy.  We'd once watched a very one-sided CBC show on how stupid homeopathy was.  They'd given whole bottles of homeopathic medicine to healthy people on the street, and no one got sick, therefore their conclusion was that homeopathy didn't work.

At this point, we were willing to try anything. After all, we'd already tried regular medicine ad nauseum and saw that not only did it not work for our kids' condition, but it also had very ill-effects for them.  So why not try something that may or may not work, but that no one would get worse from?  We decided to give it a chance.

The cool thing about the homeopath we found was that she wanted to treat the whole family. She felt that the family dynamic had been affected by the cloud we'd been under and she wanted to make sure we would all be healing together.  Later I'd learn that homeopathy works not just on the physical level, but on emotions as well.  I had a lot of anger, resentment, and fear surrounding this life that had been handed to us, and as treatment started, a lot of that became easier to deal with and much of it melted away.  I saw some beautiful shifts in my kids and for the first time in years, I started to feel hopeful.

Now, let's talk about ME for a minute.  In my third pregnancy I developed varicose veins in my left leg that made walking painful. This continued on for years after my youngest was born. The kids would call for me to come upstairs, and I would be sitting on the couch yelling back that my bum leg didn't want me to walk upstairs.  At the end of the day, I would be found on the couch with my leg propped up on a cushion.  It felt like it was made of wood.  I'd had sclerotherapy done, and although that helped with the surface veins, my problem was with the deeper ones.  I thought living with a bum leg was going to be my future.  However, within a couple weeks of starting homeopathic treatment, my leg was feeling better.  I was walking up and down the stairs and able to go for walks just for fun! What was this magic?

Another thing that changed for me was my attitude.  I used to get so angry every time I had to clean the house.  I don't know what caused that--I don't know anyone else who is like that--but it was like all the resentment in my life would pool up inside as I was scraping raisins off the floor with a razor-blade, or mopping, or wiping up other people's messes.  Homeopathy settled all that down.  I still don't love housework, but now I'm able to do it without feeling like that.  Thank goodness.

Over time (a period of 3 years) the kids kept getting better and better.  Food that used to be triggers for them became non-issues.  Things that we used to have to run to the doctor for (pink eye, UTIs, etc.) were being successfully
treated at home.  For the first time in years we were enjoying life again.

A little over a year ago, I decided that I wanted to become a homeopath.  There are too few who understand and deal with the condition that my kids had--and I say HAD, because *&^%$#@ is in our rear-view mirror.  It doesn't live here anymore.  Sometimes it comes and rears it's ugly head, but we pound it down with homeopathy.

So that's what's going on now.  I'm studying, I'm learning, and I'm seeking ways to maintain our family's health.  We've been given a second chance and I really feel that God gave us this experience so that we can help others.

What does this mean for this blog????  Stay tuned....

Explaining my Absence

Awww! I was so glad to see comments from my old bloggy friends. Thank you! I've missed you!! I've missed this space. I'm not even sure I have much to blog about these days--at least not in the way I did in the past--life has taken a 180 degree turn. I haven't sewn anything in a few years.

I used to do all my sewing at night after the kids were in bed, but then when their autoimmune stuff happened, they had nighttime anxiety issues that made it so I had to sit in their bedrooms with them while they were falling asleep. There were times they didn't fall asleep until well after midnight. All the stress and anxiety took a toll on them, of course, but also on me, and the thought of crafting, sewing, etc. just started to feel so unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Bye bye blog and bye bye Etsy shop! :( Bye bye writing tutorials for Michael Miller.  Bye bye friends I used to hang out with at the coffee shop when my kids were in school. Bye bye free time, because I started homeschooling my kids. Life pretty much fell apart.

So anyway, I turned my attention to healing my kiddos. Doctors seemed not to know what to do with them. Their answer to everything was antibiotics, more antibiotics, different antibiotics, stronger antibiotics, a combo of antibiotics and of course steroids. We watched the kiddos get worse and worse...after all, what are antibiotics but little nuclear bombs that go off in your gut twice a day? So we got off the antibiotic cycle and started trying alternative things. Diet, supplements, genetic testing, more supplements, ionic footbaths, chelation, on and on it went. We'd see improvements and then setbacks. It was a total roller coaster (times 3) until we found homeopathy.

Homeopathy saved us.

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode!!!

p.s. I'm leaving comments on, can you believe it? So unlike me, but I'm craving human interaction, so please say HI! :)

Smoothie Addiction

I've only had it for a week--my early Christmas present, the Vitamix. I love it so much. I use it everyday--once to make my smoothie for breakfast or lunch, and then once again when the kids get home from school,'cuz they like their smoothies too (well, two-thirds of them do).

My favorite smoothie is what you see here. Everything is organic. Coconut milk, a big handful of kale, one banana, frozen berries, frozen mango, frozen pineapple and a spoonful of chia.

Last night we cleared off the dinner table, and everyone had left when we realized that one of the children hadn't touched his veggie. We were debating whether to call him back when we realized he'd already had 1/2 a cup of raw kale in his snack that afternoon without even realizing it. Crisis averted. Heh heh.

Kitchen Cabs

Painting the kitchen cabinets is coming along. My goal is to finish them up by the end of the week.

DSC_0500

This whole process has been slowed down because whoever installed the cabinet doors many years ago decided that it would be OK to strip every single @$^#&%* screw. UGH! Luckily my husband introduced me to my new best friend the vice grip. My wrists are getting a good workout. Some of these screws are very hard to clamp, and for those I sacrificed a water balloon for better "gription."

Bye bye fluting

I got rid of the fluting around the fireplace. It's the only fluting in the whole house, and it started bugging me, so it had to go.

This house is kind of a lot of work. Everywhere I look there is something that needs to be done. I don't feel like I have time to blog much anymore. I think from here on out for the next few months, I'm just going to post pictures. Commentary bores me. HA HA!!

The Front Door -- after

door left

door complete

hall view

Well, I thought the door was done, except when I look at these pictures and realize that I have a little painting still to do on the very top of the trim (after I pick off the barcode sticker). Loverly. :)

Baseball shrine, I mean, closet

I've been making good progress on trimming out the downstairs. I got a little sidetracked when I got to the hall closet. It's been an eyesore for a couple of years. It's located in a bit of a tight hallway and had a bifold door on it until I ripped it off one day in frustration because it was constantly being left open and blocking traffic flow. For awhile it had a curtain on it. I could close it and not have to look at the overload. DSC_0357

Meanwhile, in the front entry, kids were keeping all their baseball gear right by the front door where people would regularly be tripping over helmets and bats, etc. I don't know how other little league families do it. Maybe they are more organized than we are. But not anymore....heh heh!

Trim so far...

I've done 10 doorway trim-outs and the molding between them in the downstairs hallways.DSC_0335

There is still plenty of caulking and painting to do.

I've also done one window and my first ever window sill, which I'm pretty excited about. :)

The Mirror

The bathroom mirror is a wall to wall mirror attached by a couple of mirror clips. I thought it needed a little dressing up.

003

I framed it out with some MDF. I had to cut some notches to make room for the clips on the top (sorry, no pictures of that), and then I glued the frame onto the mirror with gorilla glue. Is that how it's done? I don't know, but that's how I did it. The mirror and the frame are now one.

DSC_0377

I painted it black so that it would match the newly painted cabinet below. However, I forgot the little detail about the backside of the frame reflecting in the mirror. Oops.

DSC_0302

No worries. I have lots of cove molding hanging around from the door trim. So I painted up a few front AND back and trimmed out the frame.

DSC_0307

Ahhhh. Better. I still need to do a little touch up paint, but I'm calling this mirror done.
