Downright Homey

dou hwa
Just got back from Uwajimaya. I have one in my neighborhood, but don't go enough. Whenever I'm there I always think, "geesh, this place is so cool...I should come at least once a week." Today I was there to get my monthly dou hwa fix. This is kind of an acquired taste, but it's my comfort food b/c it's Taiwan street food and reminds of my childhood. It's also made of soy, so it's full of beneficial isoflavones, which is really why I eat it. Ahem! I'm sure the ginger syrup is healthy too. Let me do a quick search, hold on. OK. I'm back. Ginger has antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Good for upset stomachs and the production of mucus. Yeah. That's why I drizzle lots of ginger syrup on it. :) It's so yummy and makes me happy.

komforte
Another thing that made me happy was the discovery that Uwajimaya carries KOMFORTE CHOCKOLATES. We're having Mexican food tonight, so we're going to share this one for dessert...if I don't chomp into it before then. Can I tell you how I felt when I saw these on the shelf? You know how when you move into town, you don't truly feel like you belong until you start running into people you know? That's how I felt--like I ran into my blog friend Blair at the grocery store. Fun!

green house down the street
This next thing was cool. I was getting ready to check out, and I spotted this magazine that has an oh-so-familiar looking house on it. Hello????!! I drive by this house all the time and have always wondered what the story is behind it. It looks so unique and like the owners are purposefully making an effort to be earth friendly with that awesome roof garden. It turns out that this is a zero energy idea house. If you're interested in seeing more, they even have a website.

Then, I got home and was paging through the magazine and lo and behold there's an article about a local restaurant. And there in the picture is the bartender who understandably gave us the evil eye when we walked up to the bar with our three kids last month. Of course, once we explained that we were there to check out the concrete countertops so we could see the work of the artist who created them, he was friendly and let us stay.

Did you read this far? Did you get all that? We're getting countertops! Woo hoo! Concrete ones! In the Spring.

Overheard

hubby: Have you sent my sister her bag yet?

me: Not yet. I made another one I think she'll like even more.

hubby (confused): Wait. I thought you said that last time.

me: Well, I did. But then I made her one I think she'll like even more than that one.

The Hair Post

It's been two years since I last went to the salon. Two years of growing, growing, growing my hair out so that I could donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. I've always wanted to do it. And yesterday was the day. 10 inches of hair donated in honor of my mom, a cancer survivor, and in honor of my father-in-law, who wages daily battle with the disease (and for his beautiful wife, my mother-in-law, who is right by his side struggling with him). LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!

hairdo

If you are in the Bellevue/Redmond/Renton area looking for a hairstylist, can I recommend my friend, Sarah? She did a fantastic job, told me a hundred times how cute I was, and made me feel super comfortable in what could have been a nerve-wracking situation. You rock, Sarah! :)

Influenced

I was looking through some old photos on flickr--mostly warm ones from this past summer to cheer me up. I don't have a light box, so old photos are what I use. Heh heh.

I came across these two things that I first tried this summer in my quest to be more health-conscious. Surprisingly (or not), they've become mainstays in my diet.

kefir

flax meal

Graygoosie's beautiful photo influenced me to try kefir, and Katie encouraged me to sprinkle flaxseed meal on everything (and believe me, I do!!).

Headaches

Did I say I was going to write more about cameras--fancy vs. regular? I spent a whole weekend researching online until I got a big headache and had to take 2 ibuprofen just to fall asleep. I think I'm taking it all too seriously and need to just defer my decision. I'm going to stick with what I have until it dies. When I absolutely have to get a new one, I will. Until then, no more researching lenses and stressing out about the fact that just a lens, or even just the external flash, costs as much if not more than a point and shoot. Ugh. And all the paraphernalia that goes along with a fancy camera. I'm not ready to go down that road just yet. Besides, I want new countertops.

Life is Beautiful

A friend has let me borrow her fancy schmancy camera for a couple of days. I'm testing a theory to see if real life is more beautiful when seen through a big long lens (as some blogs might lead one to believe).

dishes waiting
Dishes awaiting. This is a picture I ordinarily wouldn't bother to take, since it's so rainy and dark here, and my point and shoot couldn't make this look pretty to save its life. BTW, that's not dirt....just coffee grounds, silllllleeeeeee!

laundry waiting
Laundry to be done. Another good one. My laundry room has no windows and I never take pictures in here for that reason. This camera does a nice job, I must say. And I haven't even cracked open the manual.

stairs almost done
Stairs. Lookie here. Slap some bullnose on these suckers, add a little trim paint and they'll be done. He said 3 weeks (which I thought was a little long). We're at the end of week 6, people. Sigh.

me coveting
Me, coveting. Here's a shot I've always wanted to take. Bona fide bloggers do this shot a lot. I never have because, well, one, this bathroom looks hideously dark and yellow w/my other camera (no natural light in here) and two, because my camera is so puny and unimpressive. This big camera is just sexaaaaay!!!!! Oh, and three, I haven't figured out whether I'm bona fide or not.

Verdict: I love her camera. I lurve it. I don't know what to do. Gotta make lunch. Will write more on this subject soon.

Camera Dilemma

mikey

Bad news. My camera was dropped by a certain nameless 3 year old. The viewfinder now has a lovely crack in the upper left quadrant, which makes picture taking less fun. I think we'll be in the market for a new camera soon. I don't know what to do. On the one hand it would be fun to splurge on something fancy with a big lens. On the other hand, I love having a point and shoot...keeps things simple. I NEED more simplicity in my life. However, looking through flickr gives me the wanties for a more powerful camera. But if I do get a nice one, I'd probably have to invest in a class or two and at the very least a book/manual which would require lots of reading and fiddling and figuring things out, not to mention all the accessories that go along with a big camera. Then that camera would probably get dropped....hmmmmmm. Don't mind my ramblings.

The Satchel

I'm working on prototypes for my future etsy shop. Part of me feels like I need to keep my work a big secret, not to be revealed until the big announcement that the shop is open. Then my rational side kicks in and says, "um, what makes you think anyone is going to rush over to buy your stuff, anyway?" Having never sold any of my things before, I have many weird/self-conscious thoughts on the subject--and I'll write more about them some other time.

This satchel is one of my prototypes. It will be leaving to a new home on the automobile-free city of Mackinac Island, MI where I hope it gets thrown over a shoulder or in a bike basket to see the sights.

The Old Routine

We're having a dark, rainy, blustery day. Appropriately suits my mood for the first day back at school for the kiddos; no more sleeping in, back to making lunches, hubby back to work...where's my coffee?
